The legend that was, Sir Bobby Robson. He produced the most amazing quotes…….

1) “We can’t replace Gary Speed. Where do you get an experienced player like him with a left foot and a head?”

2) “Ray Wilkins’ day will come one night.”

3) “If you count your chickens before they’ve hatched, they won’t lay an egg.”

4) “He never fails to hit the target. But that was a miss.”

5) “They’re two points behind us, so we’re neck and neck.”

6) “I’m not going to look beyond the semi-final – but I would love to lead Newcastle out at the final.”

7) “The margin is very marginal.”

8) “I said to the lads in the dressing room at half time, I said, there was nothing to say.”

9) “The first ninety minutes of a football match are the most important.”

10) “He’s got his legs back, of course, or his leg – he’s always had one but now he’s got two.”

11) “What can I say about Peter Shilton? Peter Shilton is Peter Shilton, and he has been Peter Shilton since the year dot.”

12) “Look at those olive trees! They’re 200 years old – from before the time of Christ.”

13) “I played cricket for my local village. It was 40 overs per side, and the team that had the most runs won. It was that sort of football.”

14) “He never fails to hit the target – but that was a miss.”

15) “We’ve got great speed in the team, not just Gary Speed, but great speed!”

16) “He’s the only man I know who could start an argument with himself” [on Craig Bellamy]

17) “Anything from 1-0 to 2-0 would be a nice result.”

18) “Until we’re out of the Champions’ League we’re still in it.”

19) “One day, someone will end a football game scoring more than Brazil. This MIGHT be the time that they lose!”

20) “Maybe not goodbye, but farewell.”

Football shirts, scarfs, flowers, letters, photos, paintings and teddy bears were just some of the things left by well wishers, and once the stadium was closed to the public 9 days after his death an amazing site was left on the Leazes End at St James’ Park, a site which couldn’t help but move you.

I visited the stadium a few times in the days after Sir Bobby’s death and i took some photos and a short video of the tributes left by fans from all over the world.
