The 2018 World Cup hasn’t even been awarded to a specific country yet, but already the battle is on for a number cities around England to be the host cities where the football matches will be played.

There’s a number of cities that are almost 100% to be selected like London and Manchester (Wembley and Old Trafford), but then you have bids from cities like Newcastle and Sunderland where it gets a bit trickier.

You see the problem is, usually Fifa don’t allow more than 1 stadium in the same city or area to stage matches in a World Cup, so with Newcastle and Sunderland being only about 10 miles apart, that rules out both cities being selected.

So the battle is on now to see who will be selected and just this week Sunderland launched their official “Sunderland 2018 World Cup Host City” bid and official website.

That’s where the laughs start…. You see, on the official “Sunderland Bid” website, they have a selection of glossy photographs showing off all that’s good about the city of Sunderland, and they include…… Bamburgh Beach, Durham Cathedral, Stockton Bridge and the best one….. The Newcastle Quayside.

Wow…. So they think to themselves, how can we promote Sunderland? Ah yes… lets show them Newcastle…Our nearest rival.

It’ll be interesting aswell, when their bid takes shape and they talk about easy air connections direct to Sunderland…. Via Newcastle.
