I recently upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion, and one thing I noticed after running the upgrade was that when I started the machine, the old Mac start-up chime was back.

When I had Snow Leopard installed, I used a small app which was added to your system preferences pane, called StartupSound.prefPane this was just what I wanted. The problem is though that StartupSound.prefPane is not compatible with Mac OSX Lion.

I needed another way of turning the Mac OSX Lion start-up sound off.

After lots of searching, I found found a new free app which fixed it for me. The app is called Psst, and works just like the other app did, although its not added to your system preferences pane, but it does the same job. This app might not work for everyone as the developers are still adding different machines and configurations to the code to make sure it works, but for me it did work.

You can get Psst from satsumac.com/Psst.php

If you have a number of tabs open when you are running the Firefox 4 browser, and you then close the browser, you will find that the next time you open the browser, those tabs will not be saved.

There is a way to change this setting without installing any extensions. To do this, just follow these instructions.

    1. Type about:config at the address bar and hit enter.

    2. Click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button

    3. In the little search box, type browser.showQuitWarning and hit enter.

So you are downloading a huge 1GB file using Firefox, and its been downloading for ages and for whatever reason you quit Firefox. Maybe you just forgot you were downloading the file or it might have just been an accident. The fact is though, you will probably have to restart that download, and if you’re like me, you will find that extremely frustrating. Maybe i’m to quick too tap CMD+Q on my keyboard, but i’m sure i’m not alone.

Thankfully there is a way to enable a warning in Firefox, so if you try and quit Firefox while you are downloading something, the software will ask you if you really want to quit.

This is how you turn this feature on.

Type about:config into your address bar in the browser.
A warning will popup, just click OK.
Now search for, browser.download.manager.quitBehavior
Double click that option and change the value from 0 to 2, and click OK.

Thats it. Now you will be warned when you try to quit Firefox whilst you are downloading a file.

Have you ever noticed whilst browsing a website such as an online shopping website, that when you then go onto another website, you then see banner ads which are advertising the exact kind of products you were just looking at on that shopping website?

This kind of thing is becoming more and more regular, with websites using cookies and other things to track exactly what you are looking at and then sharing that data with third party ad networks who in turn are then able to show highly targeted ads to you.

There is a way in Firefox 4 to stop this from happening. Just follow the instructions below,

Open up your preferences, and then select the “Advanced” tab. Then simply select the option on that page that says, “Tell websites I do not want to be tracked” – (Click the image below to see exactly where i mean.)

When I recently upgraded Firefox on my mac to version 4.0, i noticed when i loaded certain websites that i would get a popup error message saying that i could only launch that web pages plugins whilst the Firefox browser was running in 32-bit mode. I could easily switch to 32-bit mode but it required the browser to be restarted.

It is possible to run Firefox automatically in 32-bit mode when the program launches. To change this setting on a mac, simply open up Finder and go to the Applications folder. Then right click the Firefox app and click “Get Info”, and then just select the “Open in 32-bit mode” option. Next time you open Firefox, it will automatically run in 32-bit mode.

Please Note: myRun Pro is my app. I am writing this blog post to try and show off the application and detail the features available within the app.

(Click the screenshots for a full size version)

myRun Pro is a fitness app for the iPhone which allows users to easily track their running, cycling and walking activities.

App Store Link: http://itunes.com/app/myrunpro
Price: £0.59 ($0.99)

The myRun app is designed to encourage interaction between users, who can motivate each other and make getting fit fun. Users can easily add friends, comment on activities and view their friends live while they complete their own workouts.

myRun has a number of features which are designed to really push the user, and the main one is the “Virtual Trainer“. This allows the user to race against the app itself. For example, a user might want to run at a 9 minute per mile pace, so they set that up and then start their run, and they will be updated on how well they are doing during that activity compared to the Virtual Trainers pace.

Users can also setup their own “Workouts” direct on the app. For example, lets say a user want to do a 3.4 Mile run with a warm up and warm down after. The app will tell them when to warm up and when to start the run, and will then tell them when they have completed the 3.4 miles, and will then tell them when their warm down has completed. The users could of course set their workout on a time basis. So the user could choose to do a 45 minute workout, and the app will inform them when the 45 minutes is up.

Another feature that is built right into the app, is the “Routes” feature. When the user completes an activity, they have the option to store the route they have just completed, so that they can do it again some time in the future. They can then keep track of their best times for that specific route. There is also a social aspect to this feature, because users can share their routes on the myRun website, so that other users can save them and complete those routes aswell.

Also built direct onto the app is the “Friends” feature. This is an easy way that the user can view their friends activities. If their friend has chosen to have their activities public, they will be immediately visible on their friends app, and they can view their routes and stats.

Of course the app has all the basic features such as the “History” page where all saved activities are stored, and from here you can view all the stats for each activity including info such as, Duration, Distance, Date, Pace, Calories, Average Speed, Fastest Mile/KM, Slowest Mile/KM, and then you have each lap/split listed along with the actual route marked out on a map.

Everyone who uses the myRun app automatically gets full access to all the tools on the myRun website, where all of their completed activities are automatically synced. The website has a number of features which allow each user to interact with other users. Each activity page has a section where you can leave comments and users can easily add each other as friends.

Another great feature is the integration with twitter and facebook and the “Real Time” live activity pages. A user can link their account to twitter and facebook, which then allows them to automatically inform their friends they have just started or completed a new activity. As you start a new activity, a new message is posted to Twitter/Facebook with a unique website link, which is where your friends can go to and watch your activity in real time. The map and stats update live in front of them without the need to reload the page.

One final feature i would like to talk about on the website, is the “Routes” page. This is where you can plan your next run, walk or bike ride by plotting your route direct onto the map. Once you save it, that route is then synced to your app. The user has the option to share this route aswell so that others can try the route out.

The app is only £0.59p ($0.99) and can be downloaded direct on your iphone by searching for “myrun pro” on the app store or by going to this link, http://itunes.com/app/myrunpro

Please check out the myRun website at www.myrun.me, and on twitter and facebook at twitter.com/myrunapp and facebook.com/pages/MyRun/123296927734248
