Cycling The Coast2Coast (c2c) In One Day

On June 21st 2011 I cycled the Coast2Coast (C2C) unsupported from Whitehaven to Tynemouth in 1 day non stop. 16 Hours to be exact. I’ve put this blog post together to detail exactly how I did it, including info on what equipment I used, what I drank and ate, what bike I used and details about the route itself.

From start to finish the route was 142 miles and includes some pretty challenging climbs and some amazing descents where I easily hit speeds of over 40mph. The challenge actually started the day before, where I caught the train from Newcastle to Whitehaven. The plan was to stay in a hotel in Whitehaven and start really early on the 21st.

The bike I would be using is the Scott Speedster S30 Road Bike. I replaced the default tyres with some Schwalbe Marathon Plus ones, as I knew I would be going over some rough ground over certain points of the route, and I have had several flat tyres with the default slick tyres that came with the S30, so I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. continue reading »

RAB Neutrino 200 Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Here are some photos of the Ultralight RAB Neutrino 200 Sleeping Bag. You can see the bag in the stuff sack that comes with it, and this shows how small the Neutrino 200 can compress down to, and shows that it is ideal for hikers and cyclists who need a really good quality light and small sleeping bag.

The Rab Neutrino 200, which i purchased from webtogs.co.uk, weighs only 610g, and also comes with a larger bag which you can store the sleeping bag in when you are not traveling. This is so that the down feathers aren’t permanently crushed and damaged.

The Day My C2C Cycle Challenge Went Wrong, But Thankfully It Did

Blog Post Written On: 05.06.2010

For quite a while now i’ve wanted to do the Coast2Coast cycle route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth, but i’ve always had the challenge in my mind of doing it in 1 day.

Last week I thought to myself, lets just do it. So the date was set. I would attempt the C2C in one day on the following Wednesday (June 2nd).

As many of you will know, on Wednesday there were tragic events in the Cumbrian region, when Derrick Bird went on the rampage, shooting dead 12 people. Of all the days to choose to visit Whitehaven for the first time in my life, it had to be the day i was in the area when all of these tragic events were taking place. My story below will go on to explain how i was oblivious to what was going on but due to my own mistakes, i quite possibly helped myself keep out of the path of this killer. continue reading »
