I recently upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard to Lion, and one thing I noticed after running the upgrade was that when I started the machine, the old Mac start-up chime was back.
When I had Snow Leopard installed, I used a small app which was added to your system preferences pane, called StartupSound.prefPane this was just what I wanted. The problem is though that StartupSound.prefPane is not compatible with Mac OSX Lion.
I needed another way of turning the Mac OSX Lion start-up sound off.
After lots of searching, I found found a new free app which fixed it for me. The app is called Psst, and works just like the other app did, although its not added to your system preferences pane, but it does the same job. This app might not work for everyone as the developers are still adding different machines and configurations to the code to make sure it works, but for me it did work.
You can get Psst from satsumac.com/Psst.php
