Like millions of people around the world today i use popular software programs like iTunes, Photoshop, Firefox and Microsoft Word on a daily basis. But its weird to think back to when i first went online in 1998 with Freeserve when my software habits were very different.
Back then i still had a selection of software programs that i used on a daily basis, but 11 years on i use none of them now and haven’t done for years.
Below you will see 5 programs that i used on a daily basis, but now haven’t used at all for years.
1) ICQ
I used ICQ all the time from about the age of 14 for a couple of years. I didn’t use any other instant messenger software until i eventually moved over to MSN and Yahoo and more recently i now use Adium to connect to Yahoo on my Mac.
2) Winamp
I loved Winamp. Thanks to the software program listed below (number 3), i was able to listen to any song then a there instantly. I loved the different skins you could download for it, but once the iPod was born i moved over to iTunes and i never looked back.
3) Napster
Obviously i only ever used Napster for legal reasons…….Cough…. but all i can say is, when you are a kid and you have no money, napster really was your only option back then to get to listen to the kind of music you loved. 10 Years on, i can thankfully afford to spend £0.79 for a song on itunes and know i am not breaking the law, and also Napster the “Illegal Site” died in 2001.
4) Winzip
The entire time i had a Windows computer, i used Winzip. But when i switched over to the Mac World in 2006 i had no need for a third party compression utility like winzip.
5) Real Player
From day 1 of getting my first computer, Real Player was installed on my computer. It really was never one of my favorite pieces of software and i probably only used it between 1998 and 2001, but since then i have never used it. I remember the bbc.co.uk website required real player to play video content on their site but thankfully that is all in the past. Now i use the VLC player on my mac which supports many different video formats although i simply cant remember the last time being on a website that offered video in the real player format.
